Ok, I can't be bothered writing a whole comprehensive review for this, but I'll give a general overview. Some of you may have heard of these UK lads when they came out a few years ago, I think their first album was self-titled, and had hits on it like Take The Long Road and Walk It, The People, Getaway and The Truth Has No Words. Nowwww, those are the only songs I've heard from that album, but juding by those, it seems these blokes have grown up a little in the last 2 years (they were 17/18 when they released their first album). The songs on Welcome To the North are layered with guitars and enourmous vocals (thanks to mass amounts of reverb and delay). The bass is funky as hell and the drums follow that nice dance-y off beat rhythm most of the time, perfect to partay down to.
A majority of the album is this sort of heavy riffage+danceage (like the title track, Freedom Fighters, Breakin') , but there are also a few softer songs (and some songs that are soft n heavy in one, eg Bleed From Within, which starts out slow and builds back into their usual dance rock style). Anyhoo - softer songs. Into The Night is a lovely little slow ditty made to have sex to (sorry but thats what the lyrics are about too, so) and Fight The Feeling is a beautiful balladish type thing that works really well. Cessation is the most intense song and reminds me of Achilles Last Stand by Led Zep just because the sheer pace never lets up - beautiful. Guide sounds like any generic UK band - I'm not saying that in a bad way, i mean it's good, because these guys aren't just a generic UK band, so it gives them a little to fall back on if people end up hating their style I guess? What the hell am I rambling about. It sounds like Franz Ferdinand or Interpol or something, anyhoo. Open Your Mind closes the album on a nice positive note, and then a couple of minutes later a secret instrumental track builds into a well crafter monster.
All in all, this album is bloody awesome. I bought it on Thursday, listened to it the first time on Friday, listened to it another 3 times on Friday, and have listened to it atleast 3 times each day since. Each track is perfect, theres not one bad song that you wanna skip each time you play the album. I guess it appeals to me more because these are exactly the type of songs (guitar-wise atleast) that I've been trying to write for the last 2 years.
Bad review....just go buy the album! You won't regret it
