just wondering a couple of things about wah wah pedals. are the mechinics in them easily damaged? (which would mean 2nd hand ones off ebay are dodgy) ? and what is the best out of the jim dunlop crybaby and a Vox somethingorather ? oh, and should no name brands be trusted? ive seen some pedals made by companies ive never heard of b4 (eg Digitune) oh and the Boss V-wah modelling thingy, anyone know if its any good?

i just bought a wah of ebay last week. i would have had a vox three months ago but some pirate snaked me right at the end of auction. in the end, as is usually the case price was the determinator(is that a word, if not i like it anyway) so i ended up buying a danelectro wah for $90 from a shop in parramatta. turns out the pedal was brand new and i made a saving of $160. i havent had a chance to properly test it out but from what i have done with it it seems all right for my own uses. it has six different sounds and a disortion function as well. and best of all it looks really cool.

The important part of the electrics in a wahwah is the pot (or potentiometer), which is basically the same as the little dial in any tone/volume control you see on other sound, music or video equiptment. After time, the contacts in the potentiometer get a bit poor and you can hear 'scratching' as you rock the pedal back and forth. The morley pedals tried to bypass this problem by using an optical switch which sort of does the trick but leads to other problems and stuff. My first wah was a morley, and it was sweet, but a bit 'muddy' in tone - lots of lows and mids. It was damn strongly constructed i tell ya, big wide footprint and a nice side switch and light to tell you when you're cookin. Something fried in it eventually tho - it was pretty mistreated. I pinched my brother's hendrix crybaby when he moved to america, and it's heaps sharper in tone: upper mids and the high-end really wah strongly, and the lower mids are a bit easier to make 'talk' than with the morley. Not much low end tho, but if thats whats important to you (playing wah'ed riffs and stuff) you can jigger a better sound with some cunning amp dialing. The hendrix wah is cool cos it has some added gain, cooks a bit more. the advantage of the morley is that you click it on and off with a seperate (big) switch beside the footrocker, and a LED lets you know it's on. most other wahs are copies of crybabys, in that you have to rock it all the way forward and sort of PUSH it on to kick it in - and sometimes you dont get it first shot.. an aquired skill i guess so most of the other cheapo versions are basically crybaby knock-offs, and the morley is like a new concept of the thing. buy a cheapy to learn and fiddle with i think. Even better, buy a little korg AX3 or ZOOM thingy with an expression pedal, and you'll get a bunch of effects to play with for less than $200. I ocassionally use a little toy like that; its got vibrato, volume, wah, delay, repeat, whammy etc all controlable with the pedal. It's aint the same as the crybaby, but it serves its purpose. final word with using a wah: less is more. Although it helps you shred up high, backing it off a bit and rolling the pedal slowly and gently gets you warmer, more expressive sounds. Just going "back and forth, back and forth" on it sounds gay Ya gots ta groooooove on it

the best brands of wah are: morley crybaby vox its just personal prefrence between them i find. be wary of other bands. i've herd nothing good about the dano even though it looks cool as. just demo some at a guitar shop and then say i'll think about it and buy a cheaper one off ebay.

im thinking about just buying a cheap arse piece of crap off ebay, because i have an RP50 which doesnt have a built in expression pedal, but has a port to plug in one, so u can control wah, whammy, and volume, (not all at once tho, unfortunately) i never knew about having to rock crybaby's all the way forwards to turn them off,....thatd be kinda bad coz u might not wanna completely psych out the last note as ur turning it off..
