I've been playing guitar for about 2 years now and have a nice little student acoustic. I'd like to get a steel string, but I don't play with a pick. To be honest, I prefer strumming with my thumb, but that's not practical with a steel string. Any suggestions/tips for getting better at my pick usage?
Thanks

so you have been playing nylon strings or something? i play steel string with my thumb without a problem. only way to get used to a pick is to practice, you can also get a thumb pick which might help

I'd advise using thin picks to start off with (.66 - .88) just to get used to the feel of the guitar. These picks are quite flexible and it shouldn't feel too much of a "jolt" between thumb strumming and using a pick.
Get used to holding the pick with the index and thumb ONLY - it's a bad habit to start holding it like a pencil (three finger grip) because you can't pick as quickly and it takes AGES to get out of the habit (it took me a good 7 months.)
I now use 2mm picks because they're nice and firm and I'm primarily a rhythm guitarist (i.e. haven't quite got the solo skills yet.) But again, picks are all about personal choice and feel; softer picks obviously give a lighter feel but aren't great for soloing, harder picks aren't ideal for strumming but don't bend while you're trying to move over the strings quickly.
Hope that helps you somewhat.
Dan
