ive seen tim rogers support pete murray twice, which is a crying shame in itself but one i wont go into this time. On both occasions i ve found pete murray's set to be incredibly bland, compared to his support acts such as tim rogers and the temperance union and the waifs.
Very simply i find that pete murray, along with recent ben harper recordings, jack johnson et al, make non-offensive music that gets overplayed on radio and television causing the music to become embedded in pop culture, where it will remain, stuck in a timewarp.
For example, Alex Llyod (AKA the fat russian). His first album black the sun and his work with mother hubbard is quite good, and he deserved the aria he won for it. but since amazing and whatever album it came off, he has struggled. you could say that he has struggled to write something like amazing again. i say that he has put himself in a corner where is unable to shake off his tag as the "mellow song guy", and he has suffered for it. how you might ask. a few years ago he almost headlined homebake. two weeks ago he played a mid evening slot on the small second stage, just months? after releasing a new record.
Back to my point. Pete Murray and all the sound alikes have a small use by date and within a couple of years he will be sitting on the scrapheap. where boring and bland music firmly belong.
But if you're turned on by pete murray, i'm not going to hate you for it. I'll suggest something thats of a similar genre but a hell of a lot better. music is about love and passion. as long as your listening thats the first step.
and yes i was in a bad mood the first post

i like tim rogers..... he is real good.....
i get where you are coming from sleepy.... my flatmate once worked for sony and got to sit in on some in-house gigs and he saw class acts like Jeff Buckley....
though it is still fun playing pete when there are chicks about who like him.... ;D

to add a chick's opinion to the subject: i have no objection to Pete Murray (or Jack Johnson, Ben Harper etc) although they're not my favourite artists. However, I do feel this laid back and gentle music has its place. It's nice an cruisy when you want something on that you don't really have to listen to. As a bonus, I imagine it's fairly easy to get an authentic sound when you're having a bash yourself - it's not that busy. Sleepyhead was talking about commercial radio overplaying this stuff - I think they overplay most stuff when it comes out. They tend to latch onto something and play it to death and then never play it again. A little bit of restraint wouldn't go astray, or some back announcing, come to think of it.

Ever since 'so beautiful' i think pete will be pigeon-holed in that style, but i'm more of a fan of his more rocking stuff, eg lines, class a, fall your way. like very artist, he has his place in my collection, but i would like to see him shake the 'chick song' tag. im sure hes got the ability to

haha..... shake the 'chick song' tag........ perhaps he needs new writers........ and/or a better girlfriend! i find a lot of stuff i attempt to write has a common theme.... women.... past, present and future.......... how does someone change that? is it as simple as getting out and about, livin' and learning? or is there more to it? ?? cheers....
