I am currently in the market for a 12 string acoustic - does anyone have any advice that will help me select the right one (wanting to spend up to $600)

Martinez are a good brand for intro - semi pro level gear, might get yourself a semi acoustic for that price

Art and Lutherie make a very nice 12 string at about that price point as do Washburn.

thanks SpooN - I'm actually looking at Washburn what do you think cutaway or no cutaway?? I actually own a Washburn 12 string. It sounds ok, no problems with it after at least 10 years (bought new). Neck as good as ever - action still excellent. I've never been a fan of cutaways on acoustics - 12 strings even less so. 12 strings are essentially "strummers" so what use is the cutaway?

The cutaway "cuts" quite a bit from the sound produced as well - less resonance (for obvious reasons) and therefore less sound produced. Alright if you've got a pickup installed (although the sound will still be different) but if you're mic-ing it or just playing it acoustically, the cutaway just takes so much out of it. And as slider said, you're not really going to be soloing on a 12 string so keep the full body intact
