Okay, here's the deal. I've played the guitar for a while and now that I've got a part time job on top of Uni it's about time I started thinking about beefing up my electric guitar set-up. At the moment I have a basic squire strat which I'm happy with and a crappy amp that I'm not so happy with. I also have no effects apart from the overdrive already built into the amp (sounds like shit really). What does everyone reckon is the best way to go about getting a decent set up for effects. Basically a good overdrive, delay and wah wah are a must. A couple of others like maybe phaser would be nice as well. I've had a look in the guitar shops and it looks as though the best way of doing it is getting one of those multi-effects set-ups, rather than each individual pedal seperately. Is this correct? Or is the quality of sound delievered by individual pedals far superior to the multi effects thingy. Also, are there any cheap options around that anyone may know of? The ones I have looked at at the moment are around the $1000 mark, which is still a little beyond my means if I could avoid it (cosidering I also have a new amp, a digital video camera, a trip to Canada and a laptop computer on my short-term wish list!!).
Suggestions on what to start looking at would be most appreciated.

I've had a look on guitar.com.au and there seems to be some systems in the $3-400 range that would suit better. What's the difference between these cheaper ones and the more expensive $800-1000 ones that are in the guitar shop?

Better still Mick, if you want to find out about an effect pedal and what the users think try Harmony central. www.harmony-central.com/

Ok, I'm close to a decision. But there's a couple of things that I'm not sure of which will probably make my decision for me... I'm looking at the KORG AX1G and the Zoom 707 as the two options...roughly the same price, same features...except...
Zoom 707... it seems you need a memory card to record phrases longer than 6 seconds...how much is this...can't find it anywhere. (also how much is the USB interface thingy)
Korg AX1G... does it have the drum backing thingy that the Zoom has?
Thanks

I've met someone who wants to sell a second-hand digitech RP-200 for $250 Two questions: 1) Is this a reasonable price. 2) Is it risky buying a second hand one of these (i.e. is it likely to be dodgy and fall apart after a week).

That's a good price. The RP200 is close to $400 here. fortunately my brother-in-law came from the USA last month and he got me an RP200 for 200 Aussie $!! ;D He also got ma a Boss DS1 distortion pedal for a fraction of the aussie price.

shit... I've just registered on e-bay and made a bid on a zoom 707...and now I'm panicking because I'm sure if I want it...and there's only a few more hours of bidding left. I guess I was sucked in by the price ($95)... As Homer Simpson would say... damn you eBay!!

Well, I'll wait till I get it...it's probably fine, I just decided that i would probably prefer a digitech RP200, which is only a little bit more pricey...oh well...
